WA: New asthma treatment facility opens in Perth

PERTH, Dec 11 AAP - Australia's first specialist asthma treatment facility has been opened
in Perth today on International Asthma Day.

The Asthma and Allergy Clinical Trials Centre, at Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital, was
specifically designed and equipped to provide education and therapy to asthma sufferers.

Health Minister John Day said the centre would also be used to conduct research and
clinical tests.

"It will pursue studies on the causes of asthma, the health economies of the disease and
evaluate new therapies and approaches to treating asthma," he said.

Nationally, asthma was responsible for claiming the lives of more than 700 people per year.

The minister said the new centre would go a long way to reducing these figures by providing
information to assist patients and health care professionals in treating the disease.
