Ukraine's Yanukovych meets EU leaders in Brussels

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych made his first foreign trip to Brussels on Monday, where a European Union official said better Ukrainian ties with the EU do not have to come at the expense of Russia.

Still, the gesture of goodwill toward Europe may ring hollow when Yanukovych goes to Moscow on Friday to strike concrete deals with the Kremlin in a more significant meeting.

Yanukovych, who defeated the pro-Western Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, has said he wants to pursue a more balanced foreign policy than his predecessor, who alienated Moscow and sought membership in the EU and NATO.
